  • Next is to determine what is the current salt level in your pool. But if in case you just installed a new pool, remember that the salt level should be 0 ppm. If you have an older pool and need to convert to a standard chlorinator, it means that your pool has a low-level salt concentration. Typically it’s around 500 ppm.

  • To measure your pool’s current level, you need to use a saltwater test strip. If you have an older pool, the reading will be around 2.0. The table on the test strip converts the reading to a salt level of 500 ppm.

  • But if there’s a pool store nearby, you can take a water sample to verify the measured salt level. Don’t worry because this service is generally free and is more accurate.

  • To determine how many pounds you’ll be needing to bring the salt level to 3500 ppm, calculate the number of gallons in your pool. This salt contains minerals such as calcium, iron, and copper. These are bad for pools, so they use a metal sequestrant and monitor the hardness of the calcium in a pool.
